This class taught what collaboration really is. Through all the lessons, groups projects, and assignments, working with new people really brings in a perspective that collaboration is beneficial in solving problems. In class we really went through certain issues that are not openly talked about in society, going through topics such as t oxic behavior in video games , as well as issues regarding reddit. My best Post : http://esoc211-001.blogspot.com/2017/09/reddit.html http://esoc211-001.blogspot.com/2017/10/toxic-gaming.html Replies: http://quirkylogs.blogspot.com/2017/09/copy-and-paste.html#comments http://quirkylogs.blogspot.com/2017/10/media-just-keeps-evolving.html I like to give a special shout out to Josh Quirk and Jeremy Thomson for sticking with me throughout the semester. We really tackled on bout the issues presented in class , as well as working through the group projects together. They both provided me with a more in depth perception on collaboration. Josh

Food and the Environment

Image
Food and the Environment     With our next project coming up our group wanted to discuss how too much food can impact the environment and how it can have an impact on our bodies.Too much of certain foods are known to be linked to certain diseases. Foods that are high in sugar can lead to many health problems such as diabetes and obesity. We will also discuss how to combat these diseases and live a healthy lifestyle. For example eating foods in moderation along with diet and exercise can help improve your body and decease your risk of getting sick, as well as keeping the environment clean by not producing that much waste from a surplus of food. In our world we make a lot a food that goes to waste, to combat this we will discuss a ideas to not produce too much waste.

Toxic Gaming

Image
Toxic Gaming Toxicity in gaming has been a huge problem for gamers everywhere. If you play any competitive game you will most likely encounter some gamers who takes things to far. For instance getting ridiculed for not giving a good performance in a competitive match or not following the commands of other teammates can get you a nasty message sent to your inbox or getting called nasty names if the game supports voice chat. This puts other gamers in a predicament as they just want to play and don't care whether they win or lose. In the article we read in class "Can a video game company tame toxic behavior?" it uses the game league of legends as an example of the toxic environment in video games. Since league is the most popular game out there it has one of the worst gaming environments. The article also states how the company who made the game is trying to combat the toxic community. Riots way of improving the match quality is something at least, but most of the

Copyright

Image
There has been a big issue with copyright laws. Many people use the music they listen to, pictures, articles, essays into the their own work to prove a point or to express an opinion, for example, many people use content in videos, such as the ones on youtube, that's not their own to make their video more entertaining. To do this without getting slammed for breaking any laws  you must follow some guidelines, such as the ones in this prezi, that we looked at in our class. Content that you get from other people to use in your own work are followed under free use. Free use is where you can use other peoples content without being criticized for breaking copyright laws, but free use goes out the window when your content doesn't give the author any recognition for the use of their content. So as long as you cite your sources, give credit to the author, using content of others should be fine.

Piracy

Image
Piracy may be illegal but that doesn't stop people from doing it anyways. There are torrent sites that are easily accessible over the internet to download the files that your want. Websites such as lime wire, frost wire, and the pirate bay are just a few that let you download files that people uploaded themselves. Accessibility is major factor for pirating. If a person believes that a certain something is far to expensive for them achieve then that individual may end up pirating it from one of the may sources online. Even if piracy is a big issue, its not going to be easy to get rid of. Back when the pirate bay was taken offline, a new site was brought up not soon long after, making it a know idea that new sites can just pop up and give users access to free downloads.

Reddit

Image
I think reddit is a good way to share information and connect with one another. In the vide o we saw in class it went through the purpose of reddit and how it impacts peoples lives. Going through the pros and cons of sharing information of an online community, the video describes in great detail of what reddit has done to either improve peoples lives or inform them of important topics. One of example would be the ask science subreddit where people can ask a question science related. The question would then get answered be an individual who knows the topic well with other users branching off that asking more questions or adding to the discussion. While this is a good way to seek answers, not everybody will have the same point of view of a discussion. In these subreddits there will be people who will differ with others on how things should be, for instance there will be people who just want to write something that's completely off topic or write something that will hurt somebody

Five Stages of Group Development

Image
Tuckman's five stages of group development describes in good detail about the process and effort of forming a good hardworking group. In the forming stage the group must decide how much work each member must do, what tasks they have  to accomplish, as well as the main focus of the project. This stage I think is where a plan starts to form on the groups main task. In the second stage is where groups start to run into problems with issues that may or may not be related to the group entirely and is where I think most groups fall apart. If the group is still standing after stage two then stage three is where personal conflict about issues or about the groups direction begin to heal, giving each member of the group a place to share ideas and not worry about failure. The fourth stage is where the group focuses more on the main goal than any stage and also is where each group member feels more independent  allowing the formation of subgroups. This stage I think is a good way of moving
